days tough, non stop no time to take it slower
I guess I gotta tell, glad we're not playing poker
what I see working night shift out to make a quota
hear a knock on the window guy wants baking soda
eyes bloodshot snot dripping, when he last slept?
looking like he don't care when he take his last breath
half wrecked, time take a toll
decrepit for his age, life's weathered his soul
out back find a kind lady sleeping in the trash bin
off guard I stop short like a ball with backspin
can tell she's not from around the way
feeling bad she prolly got nowhere else to stay
say she left the park when they turned on the sprinklers
a handbag and blanket, traveling singular
I told her bout the dock bathrooms with showers
and the church down the road that be serving up chowder

if you asked me as a kid I never would've guessed of
all the things I'd see as an adult, the stress sucks
walking down the street stepping over cigarette butts
thinking bout homies who didn't have the best luck
two brothers, older one tough as nails
could ball, skate great and take the roughest bails
would never back down from a challenge or a fight
he'd have your back and drink you under the table any night
later was a soldier and toured as a marine
but when he came home esteem low as a ravine
negativity of war, all the evil and the harm
before he knew it shoving a needle in his arm
to kill the pain, tolerance builds
and heroin's handier than swallowing pills
until the younger brother comes home one evening
to find him in the bathroom cold and not breathing
